Ringing Again: Fix Your Smart Doorbell with ABR Electric

Is your video doorbell acting like a regular old button? If your Ring, Nest, or other smart doorbell has lost its power, you might have a “dead” transformer hiding in your attic. Ring doorbell Installation

In this video, Adrian from ABR Electric walks us through a service call where a clientโ€™s doorbell camera went totally dark.

Whatโ€™s Happening in This Video?

We headed out to a client’s home because their doorbell stopped working. After a quick trip into the attic, we found the culprit: the transformer (that little metal box that feeds power to the doorbell) was completely dead.

It had electricity going into it, but nothing coming out. Adrian swapped it for a brand-new one to get the camera back online and the home’s front door secured.

Why Do You Need a Transformer?

Most people don’t realize that your home’s outlets run on 120 volts. That is way too much power for a doorbell! If you plugged a doorbell directly into a wall outlet, it would “fry” instantly.

The “Magic” of the Transformer:

  • The Job: It “steps down” the high 120V power to a safe 16 to 24 volts.
  • The Requirement: Newer video doorbells need this specific voltage to run the camera and the Wi-Fi at the same time.
  • The Result: A doorbell that stays online 24/7 without burning out.
